In Loving Memory of O’Shae Sibley

Today at Dance Church, we gather in profound grief and sorrow to honor the memory of O'Shae Sibley, a remarkable young man whose life was tragically cut short in a violent attack at a Brooklyn gas station.

O’Shae was more than just a cherished dance artist in the heart of NYC; he was a radiant beacon of light and joy within the Vouge and Ballroom community, the Alvin Ailey Extension program, and at Philadanco. His artistry was a source of inspiration, leaving an indelible mark on all who were fortunate enough to witness his talent.

As we mourn O'Shae’s untimely passing, we must also confront the underlying issues that contributed to this devastating loss. The recent surge in anti-LGBTQIA legislation has had a deeply troubling impact on the LGBTQIA community, fostering an atmosphere of hate and emboldening those with prejudiced views. This has led to a distressing rise in violence and intolerance towards LGBTQIA individuals.

O'Shae’s tragic death serves as a heart-wrenching reminder of the real-life consequences of such hate and intolerance. When discriminatory laws and policies single out or marginalize LGBTQIA individuals, it further alienates and isolates them, creating an environment where hatred and discrimination are normalized. This normalization allows individuals harboring bigoted beliefs to act upon them without fear of consequences.

In memory of O'Shae, let us come together not only to mourn but also to unite against hatred and discrimination. We must strive for a world where everyone, regardless of their gender identity or sexual orientation, can live freely and without fear. Through education, advocacy, and empathy, we can work towards dismantling the barriers that divide us and fostering a society that celebrates diversity and embraces love.

As we pay our respects to O'Shae Sibley, may his spirit inspire us to stand up against injustice, keep on dancing, and promote a world filled with acceptance, love, and compassion for all.
